Back To School Must Have's For Pets
Back to school time is here! Even though your pets aren’t the ones who have to go to class, they still notice the changes, and it can be a stressful time for them. We’ve made a list of the three back to school must have’s for pets! These must have’s will keep your pet entertained and stress-free during the transition period.
The first must-have are interactive toys, essentially puzzles for your dogs and cats that keep their brains occupied. When their best friend goes back to school for seven hours a day, it can feel very lonely, but a rotation of puzzles and treat mazes is the perfect distraction. There are many options available in varying difficulties, but these are some of our favorites:
- Outward Hound Hide A Squirrel Puzzle Dog Toy
- OurPets Smarter Interactive IQ Treat Ball Dog Toy
- KONG Wobbler Treat Dispensing Dog Toy
If you decide on a toy that dispenses treats, make sure you have a variety of healthy treat options for your pet to enjoy.
Another great way to entertain your pet and keep them out of trouble during the long school day is to leave them a frozen treat. These treats can be made out of anything your dog or cat usually eats and are very easy to DIY. You can get fancy with your own recipe or fill a durable toy with peanut butter or cheese and freeze overnight. We like to use a KONG or the Nylabone Romp n’ Chomp. By the time your pet finishes the treat, the stress of everyone leaving in the morning will be over and they can relax for a few hours until you’re home.
This one isn’t a toy or a treat, but it’s just as important! When school starts back up, your pet may experience separation anxiety and it’s important to remind your children to make time for their buddies after school. Creating a daily routine can include activities like:
- Exercise or play in the morning before school
- Attention and exercise after school
- Family playtime in the evening after dinner
It may also help your pet to have a set schedule for feeding, bathroom breaks, and long walks. This routine gives your pet something to depend on and ensures that they get enough attention and love.
